The effect of self-reassuring letter writing on the Psychological Health and Cognitive Bias of students highly self-criticism

Abstract
The current study examined the effect of self-reassuring letter writing on self-criticism, self-reassurance, shame, guilt, symptom level(depression, anxiety, anger, somatization), and cognitive bias. Thirty eight students were selected according to higher self-criticism level and lower self-reassurance level. Participants were randomly assigned to the treatment group(n=18) or the wait-list control group(n=20) respectively. The treatment group spent 7 days self-reassuring letter writing by themselves, and the wait-list control group was untreated. Participants completed self-report questionnaire for psychological health and took the Stroop-like task to cognitive bias. The result were found to improve psychological health that self-reassurance, self-criticism, shame, guilt, symptom level(depression, anxiety, anger, somatization) in the treatment group. These results were maintained at the follow-up assessment 4 weeks later. Also, All participants were found to have cognitive bias, but their cognitive bias were presented tendency to improve after self-reassurance letter writing. Especially, these results suggest that intervention of self-reassurance letter writing for students with highly self-criticism could be effective a positive effect on unconscious information processing. Finally, Limitations and implications of this study were discussed.
